New restaurant slated at airport

The Walnut Ridge Airport Commission approved a lease during Monday's meeting with Zulu, LLC, on the building currently occupied by Parachute Inn. Zulu owner Seth Hardage of Pocahontas plans to invest $125,000 into the new business.

Hardage said he is planning to expand the current restaurant and renovate the signature plane. As stated in the lease, a minimum of $35,000 must be used to make improvements to the property in exchange for abating rent over the five-year lease.

Election commission discusses equipment, polling sites

The Lawrence County Quorum Court heard Monday from the election commission on state requirements on equipment and the possibility of closing poll sites.

Election commissioner Mike Bradley said the current machines the county is using are considered obsolete by the state. However, the county does not have the funds to purchase the new machines.

Previously the state offered a 50/50 match on the purchase of the new machines but have since rescinded that offer. County Clerk Tina Stowers said that even paying half wasn't a viable option for the county in its current financial state.

BATR named 2017 Festival of the Year

The Arkansas Festival and Events Association has recognized Beatles at the Ridge as the 2017 Festival of the Year during the AFEA Conference and Trade Show. The conference was held Feb. 7-8 in El Dorado.

Walnut Ridge Mayor Charles Snapp, who serves as chair of the Beatles at the Ridge Festival committee, along with his wife, Jackie, who is also on the committee, Lawrence County Chamber Director Lesa Walter and Jon Walter, who serves as webmaster for the event, attended the conference.

Walnut Ridge man charged with murder

Third Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Henry Boyce announced on Monday that Gary Lee Fears, 57, of Walnut Ridge has been charged with murder in the first degree.

A class Y felony, it is punishable by 10 to 40 years or life in prison. Fears also faces felony enhancement charges for being a felon in possession of a weapon and committing a felony offense in the presence of a child.

President's Day closings reported

President's Day is Monday and all local, county, state and federal government offices will be closed.

In addition, all local banks and post offices will be closed.

Sanitation routes in Walnut Ridge and Hoxie will not be affected by the holiday.
