College City, WR launch consolidation effort

The effort to consolidate College City and Walnut Ridge kicked off with a brief ceremony and signing of petitions on Tuesday morning in the Swaim Administration Building at Williams Baptist College. The petitions request that a special election be held to vote on the consolidation of the two towns.

Officials from College City, Walnut Ridge and Lawrence County were on hand for the event, which has been long discussed and pursued but not ever put to a vote.

Dr. Paul Rhoads, mayor of College City, said the consolidation of the two municipalities has been discussed for 30 years. "It's time to do something."

County jail project is moving forward

The Lawrence County Quorum Court met Tuesday, Feb. 2, to approve an ordinance authorizing the sale of bonds to finance the new Lawrence County Jail.

The jail, which is set to break ground as early as August, will be located at Southwest Sixth and West Elm streets in Walnut Ridge. The capital improvement bonds in the maximum principal amount of $9,260,000 for the purpose of financing all or a portion of the costs of acquiring, constructing, equipping and furnishing the new jail and associated law enforcement facilities.

Early voting begins Tuesday

Early voting for the March 1 Preferential Primary begins on Tuesday in the County Clerk's Office, located in the Lawrence County Courthouse in Walnut Ridge.

Lawrence County has several races on the ballot in the Democratic primary, including county judge and sheriff, five justice of the peace positions and one constable position.

Accidents claim lives

An Alicia man was killed in a two-vehicle accident at 5:44 a.m. on Feb. 3, and a juvenile from Imboden died from injuries he sustained in a December accident, according to fatal crash summaries released by the Arkansas State Police.

Brian Pieri, 51, of Alicia, was traveling northbound on Highway 67, approximately a quarter mile south of the Hoxie city limits, in a 1998 Chevrolet pickup, when he crossed the centerline.
