WR teams split with Corning
The Walnut Ridge senior boys edged Corning 60-55 in overtime in a battle of Bobcat basketball teams Friday night at Sharum Gymnasium.
Walnut Ridge jumped out to a 19-9 lead in the first quarter and led 30-22 at halftime. Corning continued to creep closer in the second half and cut Walnut Ridge's lead to 39-35 at the end of the third quarter. Corning completed the comeback in the fourth quarter to send the contest to overtime tied at 48-48. Walnut Ridge outscored the visiting Bobcats 12-7 in the extra period to come away with the victory.
Slade Dalton scored 12 points for Walnut Ridge, including six in overtime. Drew Flippo also had 12 points, while Andrew Coker finished with nine points and 12 rebounds.
Walnut Ridge improved to 9-10 with the win.
Corning won the junior boys game 47-33.
Corning's Lady Bobcats got off to a fast start and defeated Walnut Ridge 56-44 in the senior girls game.
Corning led 19-8 after the opening frame, 35-22 at halftime and 47-31 after three quarters.
Walnut Ridge's Megan Jared scored 24 points to lead all scorers.
The Walnut Ridge junior girls defeated Corning 39-20.
Walnut Ridge traveled to Piggott on Jan. 23 and defeated the Mohawks 43-37 in senior boys action.
Flippo led the Bobcats with 11 points, while Nash Gill and Coker each added 10 points.
Walnut Ridge's junior boys defeated Piggott 49-34.
The Lady Bobcats used a second-half rally to defeat the Lady Mohawks 53-45 in senior girls action on Jan. 22 at Piggott.
Walnut Ridge trailed 27-20 at halftime, but went on a 21-8 run in the third quarter to lead 41-35 entering the final period. The Lady Cats outscored the home team 12-10 in the fourth quarter to secure their third win of the season.
Jessica Stevens recorded a double-double for the Lady Bobcats with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jared followed with 16 points, and Kelly Lee added 14.
Walnut Ridge won the junior girls game 37-35. Piggott won a seventh-grade game 20-13.
