WR boys teams sweep Hoxie
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats defeated the Hoxie Mustangs 53-17 in senior boys basketball action on Jan. 8 at Mustang Gym.
Walnut Ridge led 12-7 at the end of the first quarter before outscoring the Mustangs 35-5 over the second and third periods to take control of the game.
Andrew Coker led the Bobcat scorers with 16 points. Brighton Brand finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.
For Hoxie, Colton Vassar and Gavin Waldrupe each scored four points, while Tracer Keeling and Gabe Baiza had three points apiece. Corbin Kottmier had two points, and Chance Moore added a free throw.
In the junior boys game, Ty Flippo scored 20 points, including six three-pointers, to lead the junior Cats to a 46-33 victory.
The teams played a close first half, with Walnut Ridge holding a 15-13 advantage at the intermission. The Bobcats went on a 21-9 run after the break to stretch the lead to 36-22 heading into the final period. Hoxie outscored the visitors 11-10 in the fourth quarter, but couldn't overcome the Cats' lead.
The junior Mustangs were led by Mason Woodard's 16 points. Cade Forrester scored nine points, while Joe Clayton had five points and a team-high six rebounds. Seth Brooks finished with three points.
