County jail on schedule

The new Lawrence County Jail, which began construction in August 2016, is near completion and expected to be in full operation within the first quarter of 2018.

County Judge John Thomison said the entire process has been very smooth and the commissioned firm, the SouthBuild Team, is expected to meet its completion date projection of January 2018. "Everything has been on track," Thomison said.

Sheriff Jeff Yates said once the jail is complete, the moving process will take some time. Prior to moving, Yates said extensive training would be required for jailers to learn how to properly operate the safety features in the new jail.

Yates said he is expecting to be fully moved into the new jail by March.

The jail is approximately 20,000 square feet. It includes individual cells, dormitories, the sheriff's office and an arraignment room. The facility will hold approximately 110 inmates.
