WR teams compete in tourney
Walnut Ridge's senior high basketball teams competed in the NEA Invitational Tournament at Jonesboro on Dec. 19.
The Lady Bobcats lost to Trumann 53-41 in an opening-round game.
Walnut Ridge played a strong first half, trailing just 13-12 after one quarter and 26-22 at halftime. Trumann began to pull away after the intermission, outscoring the Lady Bobcats 14-8 in the third period and 13-11 in the fourth quarter to grab the win.
Megan Jared led Walnut Ridge with 16 points, and Jessica Stevens finished with 13 points.
Later that day, the Walnut Ridge boys played a first-round contest against the Osceola Seminoles. Osceola proved too tough, defeating the Bobcats 65-48.
The Seminoles took a 24-13 lead in the first quarter and stretched it to 37-23 at halftime. Walnut Ridge closed the gap to 50-38 after three quarters, but a 15-10 run by the Seminoles in the fourth quarter put the game out of reach.
Andrew Coker had a big game for the Bobcats, with 26 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.
