WBC Tournament underway
The 59th annual Williams Baptist College High School Basketball Tournament tipped off Saturday at the Southerland-Mabee Center on WBC's campus. Three games were played in both the boys and girls brackets.
Saturday's action included:
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats advanced in the boys tournament with a 68-34 win over the Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles.
The Bobcats were led by Andrew Coker's 15 points. Kai Cunningham and Brighton Brand each scored 10 points. Slade Dalton had eight points, and Jackson Forrester added six. Logan Blackwood, Drew Flippo and Nash Gill each chipped in five points, and Jace Turner had four points.
For Hillcrest, Trevor Nunnally had 13 points. Tyson Durham had six points, and Nick Powell had four points. Colton Rose and Carson Jeffery had three points apiece. Skylar Haughhom and Caleb James each had two points, and Noah Weaver added a free throw.
Walnut Ridge was scheduled to face top-seeded Tuckerman in a second round game on Tuesday night.
The Sloan-Hendrix Lady Greyhounds defeated Walnut Ridge's Lady Bobcats 61-29.
Maddyson Lamb led Sloan-Hendrix with a game-high 11 points. Emily Luffman finished with nine points, while Ava Murphy and Annie Doney each scored eight points. Natalie King had seven points, and Lauren Honeycutt added six. Samantha Webb contributed four points. Caylea Johnson and Jessica Murphy had three points apiece, and Abbey Vance had two points.
Jacey Jones led the Lady Bobcats with eight points, and Briley Henson scored six points. Megan Jared and Jessica Stevens each scored five points. Kelly Lee had three points, and Taylor McGinty added two points.
The Lady Greyhounds advanced to the second round, where they faced second-seeded Pocahontas on Monday.
The Sloan-Hendrix boys advanced with a 68-63 win over the Rector Cougars.
Jacob Smith scored 18 points, and Jordan Dail had 17 for the Greyhounds. Hunter Stallings finished with 13 points, and Bryson Vance added eight. Brantley Gholson had seven points, and Logan Dail chipped in five.
Kirk Beshears scored 33 points for the Cougars.
Sloan-Hendrix will play second-seeded Marmaduke tonight at 6 p.m.
Hillcrest's Lady Screamin' Eagles edged the Viola Lady Longhorns 49-45 to advance to the next round.
Paige Penn and Chastity Davis led Hillcrest's balanced offense with 10 points apiece. Mickayla Smith had nine points, and Abby Orrick contributed seven points. Mollie Morgan finished with six points, and Kamdyn Willmuth had three. Hanna Parker and Gabby Jones each tossed in two points.
Viola was led by Braidlyn Fierce with 21 points.
Hillcrest faced Bay on Monday evening.
Tuckerman's Lady Bulldogs routed the Rector Lady Cougars 59-22.
Natalie Shelton led Tuckerman with 17 points. Jordyn Lane scored 13 points and Taylor Hulett added 12.
Mylesa Gant had 11 points for Rector.
The Lady Bulldogs were scheduled to play Corning on Tuesday.
The Riverside Rebels moved to the next round after defeating the Maynard Tigers 74-57.
Landon Moyer led five Rebels in double figures with 19 points. Keech Wilmoth scored 15 points. Ethan Cash and Dillon Turner each tossed in 13 points, and Demo Bowers added 12 points. Steven Stroud had two points.
For Maynard, Blane Chaffin led the way with 16 points. Dakota Lee had 14 points, and Terren Mann added 13.
Riverside will play third-seeded Corning tonight at 7:20 p.m.
Action continued with three second-round games on Monday.
Bay's Lady Yellowjackets earned a spot in the semifinals with a 50-30 win over Hillcrest.
Mallory Hartly scored 15 points, and Sarah Blackman added 12 for Bay.
For Hillcrest, Smith had 13 points, followed by Gabby Jones with eight. Ally Martin and Davis each had three points. Orrick scored two points, and Morgan added one.
Bay will play the winner of Tuesday's Marmaduke-Maynard game on Thursday at 7:10 p.m.
The seventh-seeded Sloan-Hendrix Lady Greyhounds gave second-seeded Pocahontas a tussle before falling to the Lady Redskins 55-48.
MiKayla Kirk led Pocahontas with 17 points. Rylie Mangold had 11 points, and Kate Sorg finished with 10 points.
Sloan-Hendrix was led by Ava Murphy with 13 points, while Johnson chipped in nine. King scored six points. Jessica Murphy, Webb and Luffman each tallied five points. Vance and Doney scored two points apiece, and Lamb added one point.
The Lady Redskins will play Tuesday's Corning-Tuckerman winner in a semifinal game on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
In Monday's only boys contest, Bay moved into the semifinals by edging Pocahontas 65-61.
Bay was led by Layne Austin with 19 points. Dax Gipson had 13 points, while Ian Kiech and Tyler Hartgen each added 10 points.
Ryan Roberts led Pocahontas with a game-high 29 points. Clayton Hale added 11 points.
Bay will face the winner of Tuesday's Tuckerman-Walnut Ridge game in a boys semifinal matchup on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
