The Haskell Harmony Grove Cardinals recovered a Hoxie fumble with less than a minute remaining to escape Crider Field with a 26-20 victory over the Mustangs in the first round of the 3A State Football Playoffs on Friday night.

The turnover thwarted a second-half comeback by the Mustangs, who trailed 14-0 at halftime. Cardinal quarterback Hunter Hilson found Logan Whitley with a 28-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. The Hilson-to-Whitley combination struck again in the second quarter from 27 yards out to give Harmony Grove its two-touchdown advantage at the intermission.

Hoxie's offense came out strong in the second half, as Diamani Davis put the Mustangs on the scoreboard with a 26-yard run with 9:13 to play in the third quarter. Carson Spargo's PAT cut the Mustangs' deficit to 14-7. The Mustangs tied the game when Chandler Spradlin tossed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Chase Moore at the 2:01 mark of the third. Spargo's extra point knotted the game at 14-14.

Harmony Grove regained the lead on Hilson's six-yard run in the final seconds of the third quarter. The extra point attempt was no good, leaving the Cardinals' lead at 20-14.

Davis found the end zone from four yards out for the Mustangs midway through the fourth quarter. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful and the game was tied, 20-20, with 6:34 remaining.

The tie didn't last long, as Jayce Harrison scored on a 30-yard scamper to put Harmony Grove in front 26-20 with 4:02 to play. The PAT attempt was no good.

Hoxie drove deep into Harmony Grove territory when the fumble occurred at the three-yard line with 40 seconds on the clock. The Cardinals ran out the clock to preserve the win.

Davis finished the game with 130 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Spradlin had 111 yards on 26 carries. Hayden Riggs had one carry for four yards.

Spradlin completed 13/28 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown.

Chase Moore led the Mustang receivers with six catches for 109 yards and a touchdown. Chance Moore caught three passes for 37 yards. Lucky Fallis and Davis each had two receptions for 28 and 17 yards, respectively.

Defensively, Hoxie was led by Keifer Wilson with seven tackles. Chase Moore had six tackles, and River Brewer finished with four tackles. Riggs had three tackles and one tackle for loss.
