GETTING AN OVERVIEW - Officials involved in the future disaster training facilities, planned in Walnut Ridge and Imboden, look over a map of the Walnut Ridge Regional Airport and Industrial Park. The group met at the airport last Wednesday for an onsite visit of the area. They include (seated, from left): Sherrie Mitchell of Cong. Christmas Open House is Sunday

The Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce's Shop Local Committee has announced plans for the 2017 Christmas Open House.

The event will be held on Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Shoppers will have the opportunity to register at each business to win Chamber Bucks that can be spent at any of the participating businesses. The Chamber will draw for one $100 winner and two $50 winners from the names entered at all locations.

Atrium at Williams dedicated to Gibbens

Williams Baptist College's newly renovated commons area in the Maddox Center was dedicated during a ceremony on Saturday at 2 p.m. as part of Homecoming 2017 festivities.

In honor of Professor Jerry Gibbens, who marked 50 years of service at Williams during spring commencement exercises, the area has been named the Jerry D. Gibbens Atrium

Joining Jerry for the ceremony were his wife, Barbara, daughter, Julie, and daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Ron Glenn. Gibbens, his wife, Barbara, and their two daughters are all graduates of Williams.

Victim of house fire identified

An early morning house fire on Oct. 28 claimed the life of Eric Anglin, according to Hoxie Fire Chief Chris Ditto.

The Lawrence County 911 center received a call around 6 a.m. on Oct. 28, reporting a house fire on Burke Street in Hoxie. The fire was fully-involved when firefighters arrived.

The fire was extinguished, and one victim was found in the home. The name of the victim was not released until positive identification was made by the Arkansas State Crime Lab.

Veterans event is Saturday

The Wings of Honor Museum will host a Veterans Day program and fish fry on Saturday at the museum.

Everyone is encouraged to attend a Veterans Tribute and Recognition Program at 11 a.m. to honor veterans and show appreciation for their service.

Following the ceremony, the museum will be open for individuals to tour and see the new exhibits and displays.
