Lady Mustangs are
After advancing through the first four rounds of the 3A State Volleyball Tournament on their home court, the Hoxie Lady Mustangs faced the two-time defending champion Paris Lady Eagles in the championship match on Saturday in Hot Springs.
Paris won a 27-25 barnburner in the first set, then went on to take the next two sets 25-11, 25-13 to capture their third consecutive state title.
For Hoxie, Sydney Gillham had six digs, six kills, three blocks and was 7/7 serving. Kelsey Moody had five assists, eight digs, a kill and was 10/10 serving. Kayla Roberts had five digs, two kills, three blocks and was 12/13 serving.
Lady Cats end season in state semifinals
The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcat volleyball team concluded the 2017 season with an exciting run in the 3A State Tournament at Hoxie. The Lady Bobcats won three matches before losing to the eventual state champion Paris Lady Eagles in the semifinals on Thursday, 10-25, 7-25, 22-25.
Walnut Ridge finished the regular season as 3A Northeast Conference runners-up with a 5-2 record and a 20-11 overall record.
Against Paris, Sydney Burgin was 7/8 serving, with an ace, four assists and 11 digs. Katie Kersey was 6/7 serving, with an ace, a kill and four digs, and Anna Wilcoxson had five digs. Baylee Haskins was 7/9 serving and had three kills, an assist and 16 digs.
Cats record big win over Corning
Cade Burris rushed for three touchdowns and Cole Manning ran for two more as the Walnut Ridge Bobcats snapped a five-game losing skid with a 49-14 rout of Corning's Bobcats on Friday night at Corning.
Walnut Ridge got off to a fast start, with 21 first-quarter points. Burris started the scoring with a one-yard run with 9:32 to play in the opening period. Nick Foster added the PAT for a 7-0 Walnut Ridge lead.
Corning cut the lead to 7-6 with a long touchdown pass, but failed on the conversion attempt.
Mustangs overcome Piggott
The Hoxie Mustangs scored 28 unanswered points to overcome an early deficit and defeat the Piggott Mohawks 50-36 in 3A-3 football action Friday night at Crider Field. Mustang quarterback Chandler Spradlin accounted for five touchdowns in the victory, which clinched the conference's third playoff seed for the Mustangs.
Hoxie took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Spradlin ran 20 yards for a touchdown and Carson Spargo kicked the extra point.
Piggott took an 8-7 lead on a two-yard run by John Jones and a successful two-point conversion. Mason Tillman added a four-yard scoring run later in the period. Hoxie stopped the two-point attempt, but the Mohawks led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Hillcrest drops close game to Ridgefield Christian
Colton Rose scored 42 points for Hillcrest, but Ridgefield Christian edged the Screamin' Eagles 82-76 in senior boys basketball Friday night at Jonesboro.
Ridgefield led 23-16 after one quarter, 42-36 at halftime and 59-51 at the end of the third quarter.
Rose also had six steals in the contest, while Tyson Durham finished with 16 points.
The senior boys dropped to 1-3 on the season.
