County receives FEMA funding

Lawrence County Judge John Thomison said the county received six checks from FEMA last week to reimburse the county for work done to roads following flooding in the spring.

There was extensive road damage from flooding in April and May, and Lawrence County was one of several counties that received a federal disaster declaration.

The county received its first reimbursement check in September and has now received all the funds designated for the road department.

Johnson to be inducted 45 years after hijacking

Each year the Arkansas Aviation Historical Society honors a select few individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of aviation in Arkansas or the nation. This year, one of the three honorees is Harold Johnson of Walnut Ridge.

On Thursday, Nov. 9, the Arkansas Aviation Historical Society will induct Johnson, as well as Zane Anderson and General William Smith into the Arkansas Aviation Hall of Fame.

The ceremony will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. in the CALS (Central Arkansas Library System) Ron Robinson Theater in Little Rock. Tickets are available at The Arkansas Aviation Historical Society website,

Chamber Banquet set for Nov. 15

The Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce will host its annual banquet on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at noon at The Studio in downtown Walnut Ridge.

Dr. Deborah Persell, Arkansas State University's interim director of disaster preparedness and emergency management, will be the guest speaker. She will share information about the new disaster facilities that will be constructed in Lawrence County.

WR Airport seeks funding for fuel farm

The Walnut Ridge Airport Commission voted to start the grant application process for a new fuel farm at the Oct. 23 meeting.

The fuel farm, which is used to store the airport's fuel, is over 40 years old. The commission has been looking at options to fund a replacement over the past few years.

Accident claims life

An accident on the evening of Oct. 24 led to one fatality, according to a preliminary fatal crash summary released by the Arkansas State Police.

Gabrielle Gates, 18, of Black Rock, was killed when the 2006 Nissan she was driving northbound on Highway 63, near Imboden, left the roadway in a curve, overturned and struck a tree.

One dead in house fire

An early morning house fire claimed one life on Saturday, according to Hoxie Fire Chief Chris Ditto.

The Lawrence County 911 center received a call around 6 a.m. Saturday, reporting a house fire on Burke Street in Hoxie. The fire was fully-involved when firefighters arrived.
