Bobcats fall to Newport
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats walked into an ambush Friday night at Newport's Greyhound Field. Newport jumped on the Bobcats for four touchdowns in the first quarter and two more in the second period en route to a 49-6 win in 3A-3 Conference football action.
Newport's defense was also strong, holding the Bobcats to just 80 yards of total offense for the game. The Greyhounds defense chipped in on the scoreboard by recovering two Walnut Ridge fumbles in the end zone, leading to 14 points.
Walnut Ridge's only points came on a 37-yard touchdown run by Andrew Brewer with 2:50 to play in the third quarter.
Mustangs record homecoming win
Hoxie's third consecutive win of the season came in easy fashion, as the Mustangs made short work of the Manila Lions, scoring 35 first-quarter points en route to a 55-18 victory in front of a homecoming crowd Friday night at Crider Field.
Hoxie opened the scoring when quarterback Chandler Spradlin found Chance Moore with a 12-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to put the Mustangs in front 6-0. Diamani Davis scored on a seven-yard run, and Spradlin added the two-point conversion on a keeper to push Hoxie's lead to 14-0.
Spradlin connected with Gavin Waldrupe on a 72-yard touchdown pass later in the period. Carson Spargo kicked the extra point as the lead grew to 21-0.
Lady Mustangs record victories
Hoxie's Lady Mustang volleyball teams had a successful week on the court. Both the junior and senior high team won matches against Izard County Consolidated, Pocahontas and Midland.
Hoxie hosted ICC on Thursday and swept the Lady Cougars in senior action, 25-7, 25-5, 25-7.
For the Lady Mustangs, Kelsey Moody had 10 assists, a dig, a kill and was 12/13 serving, with three aces. Kayla Roberts had two kills and was 18/20 serving, with four aces. Christin Barker had four digs and was 3/3 serving, and Kaitlin Henson had six kills. Mackenzie Orrick had two digs and was 7/7 serving, with two aces, and Ellie Britt had four kills. Emily Davis had eight assists, two digs, five kills and was 11/11 serving, with three aces. Abby Guntharp had an assist and an ace. Sarah Riggs had three kills and was 9/11 serving, with two aces. Kinzie Worlow and Erika Hodge-King each had a dig.
Lady Cats enjoy winning week
The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats enjoyed an undefeated week on the volleyball court last week. The Lady Cats dropped only one set while picking up victories over Cave City, Izard County Consolidated and Ridgefield Christian.
Walnut Ridge's record now stands at 13-7 overall and 3-1 in 3A Northeast Conference play.
The Lady Bobcats traveled to Cave City on Thursday and swept the Cavewomen 25-11, 25-21, 25-8.
For Walnut Ridge, Sydney Burgin was 11/14 serving, with two aces, two kills, seven assists and eight digs. Katie Kersey had two aces, a kill, an assist and three digs. Anna Wilcoxson recorded one ace, a kill and seven digs. Baylee Haskins was 12/14 serving, with five aces, five kills, four assists and five digs. Sheridan Smith had five kills, a block and two digs.
