Mustangs defeat Newport, 28-7

The Hoxie Mustangs stormed back from an early deficit to defeat the Newport Greyhounds 28-7 in 3A-3 Conference football action Friday night at Crider Field.

Newport's Joe Broadus scored on a three-yard run with 2:10 to play in the first quarter. The PAT gave the Greyhounds the early 7-0 lead.

Hoxie answered when Chandler Spradlin hooked up with Lucky Fallis for an 87-yard touchdown with 8:54 to play in the second quarter. Carson Spargo's extra-point tied the contest at 7-7.

Spradlin put the Mustangs ahead with a two-yard run with 1:54 remaining in the half. Spradlin ran for the conversion to give Hoxie a 15-7 lead at halftime.

Hoxie maintained the 15-7 lead until the final seconds of the third quarter when Diamani Davis scored on an eight-yard run to increase the Mustangs' lead to 21-7.

The Mustangs' final touchdown came on a 45-yard interception return by River Brewer in the game's final minute. Spargo's PAT provided the 28-7 final score.

Spradlin was six-of-12 passing, for 225 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 47 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

Davis led Hoxie's ground game with 89 yards and a touchdown on 19 attempts, and Hayden Riggs added 17 yards on three carries.

Fallis was the Mustangs' leading receiver with three catches for 149 yards and a touchdown. Chase Moore had a 69-yard reception, and Gavin Waldrupe caught one pass for seven yards.

Davis led the Mustang defense with 15 tackles. Riggs contributed 11 tackles. Harley Cullins, John T. Washburn and Chase Moore each had seven tackles. Cameron Johnson, Brewer and Keifer Wilson each had five tackles. Brewer also had two interceptions, and Ethan Blocker had one interception.

Hoxie is now 1-0 in conference play and 2-2 overall this season. The Mustangs host the Manila Lions at Crider Field this week for homecoming.
