Mustangs defeat Newport, 28-7

he Hoxie Mustangs stormed back from an early deficit to defeat the Newport Greyhounds 28-7 in 3A-3 Conference football action Friday night at Crider Field.

Newport's Joe Broadus scored on a three-yard run with 2:10 to play in the first quarter. The PAT gave the Greyhounds the early 7-0 lead.

Hoxie answered when Chandler Spradlin hooked up with Lucky Fallis for an 87-yard touchdown with 8:54 to play in the second quarter. Carson Spargo's extra-point tied the contest at 7-7.

Spradlin put the Mustangs ahead with a two-yard run with 1:54 remaining in the half. Spradlin ran for the conversion to give Hoxie a 15-7 lead at halftime.

Bobcats fall to Manila

A 24-point fourth quarter lifted the Manila Lions to a 36-20 victory over the Walnut Ridge Bobcats in 3A-3 Conference football action Friday night at Manila.

Manila took a 6-0 lead with a touchdown late in the first quarter. Walnut Ridge tied the game 6-6 on a one-yard run by Colin Phillips with 5:33 remaining in the second period.

The Lions moved into a 12-6 lead with a touchdown with 3:45 to play in the quarter.

Lady Mustangs beat Walnut Ridge

The Hoxie Lady Mustangs defeated Walnut Ridge in senior high volleyball action Thursday at Mustang Gym in Hoxie.

The Lady Bobcats won the first set 28-26 before Hoxie evened the match by taking the second set 25-15. The next two sets went down to the wire, with the Lady Mustangs eking out a pair of victories, 26-24, 25-22, to take the match in four sets.

Lady Cats compete in Playday

The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcat volleyball team participated in the Ron and Pat Carmack High School Playday, hosted by Jonesboro High School and held at Valley View School, on Saturday.

Walnut Ridge went 0-3 in pool play, dropping matches to Greene County Tech (24-26, 14-25, 0-25), Desoto County (21-25, 17-25) and Bryant (18-25, 9-25).

Lady Mustangs remain undefeated

The Hoxie senior high volleyball team remained undefeated on the season with a three-set sweep of Cave City on Sept. 19 at Mustang Gym. Scores of the sets were 25-14, 25-9, 25-7.

For Hoxie, Kelsey Moody had eight assists, four digs, three kills and was 15/16 serving, with four aces. Kayla Roberts had two digs, four kills and was 15/15 serving, with an ace. Christin Barker had 10 digs, and Kaitlin Henson contributed six kills. Mackenzie Orrick had five digs and was 14/14 serving, with two aces. Ellie Britt had a dig and four kills. Emily Davis had 10 assists, four kills and was 9/9 serving, with an ace. Sarah Riggs had two assists, four digs, a kill and was 16/17 serving, with an ace.
