Mustangs drop close
game to Westside

The Westside Warriors came up with a late interception to seal a 35-27 victory over the Hoxie Mustangs in senior high football action Friday night at Crider Field.

After a scoreless first quarter, both offenses began rolling in the second period. Hoxie opened the scoring on a 66-yard touchdown pass from Chandler Spradlin to Chance Moore at the 10:50 mark of the period. Carson Spargo addd the PAT for a 7-0 Mustang lead.

Westside answered with touchdowns on their next two drives to take a 14-7 lead with 2:12 to play in the half.

The Mustangs responded with a clutch drive late in the quarter, capped by Spradlin's four-yard run on the final play before intermission. Spargo's extra point sent the teams to the locker room deadlocked 14-14.

Hoxie's momentum carried over into the second half, as Spradlin found Lucky Fallis with a six-yard touchdown pass to put the Mustangs ahead 20-14. Spargo again added the PAT for a 21-14 lead with 8:07 to play in the third.

The back-and-forth action continued when Westside tied the game 21-21 on their ensuing possession. The Warriors scored again later in the period and headed into the fourth quarter holding a 28-21 advantage.

Hoxie scored on a four-yard run by Hayden Riggs with 5:28 to play in the game. The conversion attempt was no good, leaving Westside with a 28-27 advantage.

The Warriors stretched the lead to 35-27 with a touchdown at the 1:45 mark.

Following the kickoff, Hoxie mounted a final drive deep in their own territory. The Mustangs marched to Westside's 32-yard line before a Warrior defender picked off a Mustang pass to end the threat. Westside then ran out the clock for the victory.

Spradlin finished the game with 15 completions on 28 attempts, for 190 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 17 times for 68 yards and a touchdown. Chance Moore completed one pass for 30 yards.

Diamani Davis led Hoxie in rushing with 71 yards on 13 carries. Riggs had 26 yards and a touchdown on 10 attempts, and Keifer Wilson added seven yards on two carries.

Chance Moore caught six passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. Chase Moore had five receptions for 73 yards. Gavin Waldrupe had two receptions for 15 yards. Wilson had one reception for 20 yards, and Fallis had a six-yard touchdown reception.

Wilson was the Mustangs' leading tackler, with nine stops. Davis and Chase Moore each recorded eight tackles. Drake Mounts, John T. Washburn and Harley Cullins made six tackles apiece. Riggs and Mounts each recorded a sack.

The Mustangs will be on the road this week when they travel to Cave City for their final non-conference game of the regular season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday night.
