'Go, Dogs, Go!'
If you like dogs, Stewart Park is the place to be this Saturday. Dogs take center stage at Thumperthon, the 5K race/walk, set to commence at 9 a.m.
Being at Thumperthon brings to mind the Dr. Seuss classic children's book, "Go, Dogs, Go!" There are big dogs and little dogs, dogs of all colors, with long hair and short hair. Some of the dogs push their owners to go a faster pace, while others are content to walk or run alongside their two-legged running partners.
Pictures of the Past
The Hoxie School District was established in July of 1886 from portions of three existing school districts, Surridge, Old Walnut Ridge and Walnut Ridge. In 1890, the district purchased two lots from Mary Boas on the southeast corner of Lawrence and Annie Streets and built this two-story brick schoolhouse. It was used until 1908 when a new schoolhouse was built at another location. This photo was taken of the back of the building around 1910. The tracks in the foreground belonged to the Hoxie, Pocahontas and Northern Railroad, which are now one end of the Rail-to-Trails walking and biking path that stretches from Hoxie to the College City area of Walnut Ridge. (Pictures of the Past is a cooperative effort of The Times Dispatch and the Lawrence County Historical Society. Readers are encouraged to submit historic photos.)
