Mustangs fall to Trumann, 35-20
The Trumann Wildcats surged to a 28-0 halftime lead over Hoxie and went on to defeat the Mustangs 35-20 in high school football action Friday night at Trumann.
Touchdown runs by Cade Gartman and Jesse Penter gave Trumann a 13-0 lead after one quarter of play.
Trumann extended their lead in the second period when Gartman scored on a 68-yard gallop at the 10:08 mark of the second quarter. Kolton Jones' two-point conversion made the score 21-0.
Hoxie threatened to close the gap later in the quarter, driving deep into Trumann territory. The Wildcats' Alex Moses ended the threat by picking off a Mustang pass and scampering 99 yards for Trumann's fourth touchdown. The extra-point gave the Wildcats a 28-0 lead heading into halftime.
Trumann's final score came on Jay Taylor Morgan's four-yard run with 9:31 remaining in the third quarter.
The Mustangs' rallied for 20 points in the fourth quarter. Diamani Davis scored Hoxie's first points on a 14-yard run. Later, quarterback Chandler Spradlin threw 20 yards to Lucky Fallis for another score. Carson Spargo kicked the extra-point to bring Hoxie to within 35-13.
Keifer Wilson added a 39-yard touchdown run late in the game, and Mackenzie Foresha added the extra-point.
Davis was Hoxie's leading rusher with 71 yards on 10 attempts, while Wilson finished with 68 yards on four carries. Hayden Riggs had 53 yards on four attempts. Spradlin added 27 yards on 13 attempts and Chase Moore carried once for two yards.
Spradlin completed four-of-nine passes for 41 yards.
Chase Moore caught two passes for 11 yards. Lucky Fallis had a 20-yard touchdown reception, and Chance Moore caught one pass for 10 yards.
Harley Cullins led Hoxie's defensive effort with seven tackles. Davis, John T. Washburn and Riggs each recorded five tackles. Wilson, Caleb Littlejohn and Drake Mounts finished with four tackles apiece, and River Brewer forced a fumble.
Hoxie will host Westside in their home opener Friday night at Crider Field. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Friday is also Peewee Night.
