WR opens with win over Poyen
Walnut Ridge quarterback Tristan Hoffman tossed three touchdown passes to Slade Dalton in the third quarter as the Bobcats overcame a halftime deficit to defeat the Poyen Indians 26-22 in the senior high football opener Friday night at Poyen.
The Bobcats and Indians battled through a scoreless first quarter, but Poyen took the lead on a touchdown pass on the first play of the second period. The two-point conversion gave the Indians an 8-0 lead.
Walnut Ridge found the end zone on their ensuing possession when Cade Burris scored from three yards out with 8:58 to play in the half. The try for two points was unsuccessful, leaving Poyen with an 8-6 lead, which they would carry to the locker room at halftime.
Poyen extended their lead to 14-6 on a touchdown pass at the 9:41 mark of the third period.
Walnut Ridge's comeback began when Hoffman connected with Dalton for a five-yard score with 6:57 to play in the quarter. Hoffman then passed to Burris for two points and a 14-14 tie.
The Bobcats' took the lead on their next possession when Hoffman found Dalton from seven yards out. The conversion was no good, but Walnut Ridge still held a 20-14 advantage with 2:12 remaining in the third quarter.
Walnut Ridge stretched the lead to 26-14 on Dalton's 35-yard touchdown reception with 51 seconds left in the period.
Poyen cut the lead to 26-22 with a touchdown and two-point conversion with 44 seconds left in the game.
Hoffman finished with 15 completions on 25 attempts for 254 yards and three touchdowns.
Burris led the Bobcats' running attack with 41 yards on eight carries. Colin Phillips added 29 yards on eight attempts. Andrew Brewer had 14 yards on three carries, and Hoffman ran 15 times for 10 yards.
Dalton led the Cats' receivers with seven catches for 105 yards and three scores. Burris caught four passes for 91 yards. Tyler Hall had three receptions for 51 yards, and Bryson Farmer had a seven-yard reception.
Hoffman also led the defensive charge with eight tackles and a sack. Burris had seven tackles, and Nick Foster recorded six stops. Drew Brewer had five tackles, a sack and recovered a fumble, while Andrew Brewer had three tackles and an interception.
Walnut Ridge is on the road again this week, traveling to Lepanto to take on the East Poinsett County Warriors. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
