WR opens with win over Poyen

Walnut Ridge quarterback Tristan Hoffman tossed three touchdown passes to Slade Dalton in the third quarter as the Bobcats overcame a halftime deficit to defeat the Poyen Indians 26-22 in the senior high football opener Friday night at Poyen.

The Bobcats and Indians battled through a scoreless first quarter, but Poyen took the lead on a touchdown pass on the first play of the second period. The two-point conversion gave the Indians an 8-0 lead.

Walnut Ridge found the end zone on their ensuing possession when Cade Burris scored from three yards out with 8:58 to play in the half. The try for two points was unsuccessful, leaving Poyen with an 8-6 lead, which they would carry to the locker room at halftime.

Mustangs fall to Trumann, 35-20

The Trumann Wildcats surged to a 28-0 halftime lead over Hoxie and went on to defeat the Mustangs 35-20 in high school football action Friday night at Trumann.

Touchdown runs by Cade Gartman and Jesse Penter gave Trumann a 13-0 lead after one quarter of play.

Trumann extended their lead in the second period when Gartman scored on a 68-yard gallop at the 10:08 mark of the second quarter. Kolton Jones' two-point conversion made the score 21-0.

Hoxie threatened to close the gap later in the quarter, driving deep into Trumann territory. The Wildcats' Alex Moses ended the threat by picking off a Mustang pass and scampering 99 yards for Trumann's fourth touchdown. The extra-point gave the Wildcats a 28-0 lead heading into halftime.

Lady Mustangs beat Newport

Hoxie's volleyball teams picked up wins over Newport's Lady Greyhounds on Aug. 28.

The senior Lady Mustangs swept the Lady Hounds 25-7, 25-16, 25-9.

For Hoxie, Sydney Gillham had three assists, seven digs, nine kills, five blocks and was 10/10 serving. Kelsey Moody had 15 assists, six kills and was 18/19 serving, with three aces. Kayla Roberts added seven kills and was 7/7 serving, with an ace. Christin Barker had 12 digs and was 9/9 serving, with two aces. Kaitlin Henson had five kills and two blocks. Mackenzie Orrick finished with seven digs and was 17/17 serving, with an ace, and Emily Davis contributed 16 assists and seven kills.

Lady Cats drop games to Westside, sweep Midland

The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats traveled to Jonesboro to take on Westside's Lady Warriors in high school volleyball action on Aug. 29. Westside won the match in three sets, 25-16, 25-20, 25-20.

For the Lady Bobcats, Baylee Davis finished with six assists and 10 digs, while Anna Wilcoxson added 13 digs. Baylee Haskins had four kills and 11 digs, and Jordyn Jones added eight kills and four digs. Katie Kersey chipped in an ace, a kill and nine digs, and Madi Mullen added an assist and a dig. Olivia Cox had five kills, a block and a dig. Sydney Burgin had two aces, four kills, 12 assists and 15 digs, and Sheridan Smith added four kills and an assist.

Walnut Ridge fell to 4-2 overall with the loss.
