AAA magazine highlights
WR's Beatles festival

One of my favorite publications to read is the American Automobile Association (AAA) Southern Traveler magazine. The widely distributed publication, for AAA members in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, comes out every two months, and features some great ideas for weekend trips or longer travel destinations.

The newly released September/October 2017 edition features Walnut Ridge's "Beatles at the Ridge" festival on page 4A. Titled "Arkansas town celebrates its link to the Fab Four" is the lead item under the heading of TravelTreasures.

Pictures of the Past

Maxine Mize of Smithville shared a newspaper clipping including this 1895 photograph of the Flat Creek School, west of Powhatan. The photo was originally submitted by Farris Herren to the Lawrence County Historical Society for a sesquicentennial exhibit. Mize began her teaching career at the school in the 1940s, teaching all eight grades. (Pictures of the Past is a cooperative effort of The Times Dispatch and the Lawrence County Historical Society. Readers are encouraged to submit historic photos.)
