Lady Mustangs win

The Hoxie senior high volleyball team took first place at the Cave City Classic on Saturday. The Lady Mustangs won the tournament without dropping a set.
Hoxie opened pool play by defeating Heber Springs 25-14, 25-11, then downed Southside 25-16, 25-18 to advance to bracket play as the top seed.
In bracket play, the Lady Mustangs began with a rematch against Southside. Hoxie once again dispatched the Lady Southerners 26-24, 25-16 to set up a meeting with Walnut Ridge in the semifinals. Hoxie eliminated the Lady Bobcats in two sets, 25-14, 25-17 to advance to the championship match.
The Lady Mustangs faced Pocahontas in the finals and made short work of the Lady Redskins with a 25-9, 25-19 sweep to earn the title.
Two Hoxie players were honored following the tournament. Sydney Gillham was named the Most Valuable Player, and Kelsey Moody was named to the All-Tournament team.
Gillham finished with 43 digs, 35 kills, nine blocks, and was 39/41 serving, with three aces. Moody totaled 38 assists, 15 digs, 23 kills and was 39/40 serving, with six aces.
Also for Hoxie, Kayla Roberts had five digs, 13 kills, five blocks and eight aces. Christin Barker had 48 digs and was 26/26 serving. Kaitlin Henson had eight kills and five blocks. MacKenzie Orrick had 26 digs and was 38/40 serving, with three aces. Ellie Britt had 15 kills and eight blocks, and Emily Davis finished with 49 assists, five digs, seven kills and was 46/48 serving, with three aces.
Hoxie traveled to Paragould on Aug. 22 to face the Crowley's Ridge Academy Lady Falcons.
Hoxie won the senior high match in five sets, 25-19, 13-25, 25-21, 9-25, 15-5.
Gillham had 11 digs, five kills, six blocks and an ace. Moody finished with 15 assists, six digs, five kills, a block and was 15/15 serving, with two aces. Roberts had three digs, four blocks and was 13/14 serving, with an ace. Barker tallied 11 digs and was 7/7 from the service line. Henson had two kills and three blocks. Orrick had 15 digs and was 13/13 from the service line. Britt had three digs, 10 kills and three blocks. Davis had eight digs and was 16/16 serving, with an ace.
The junior Lady Mustangs were also victorious, defeating CRA 25-14, 25-20.
Maya Mercado had three digs, three kills and a block. Kady Greer added three kills, and Olivia Palmer contributed two digs. Mya Pinkston was 5/5 serving, with two aces. Kailey Moody had five assists, a dig and was 17/17 serving, with three aces. Ellery Gillham had a dig, two kills and three aces. Chloe Prater had three digs and an ace, and Cara Forrester had a dig and was 5/5 serving.
Hoxie opened the 2017 season by defeating 3A-3 Conference rival Piggott 25-8, 25-15, 25-9 on Aug. 21 at Mustang Gym.
Gillham totaled five digs, 10 kills, two blocks and was 11/11 serving, with an ace. Moody had 16 assists, seven digs, five kills and was 25/25 serving, with 10 aces. Roberts tallied three digs, 10 kills and was 5/6 serving. Barker had 13 digs and was 9/9 serving, with an ace. Henson had two digs and two kills. Orrick finished with three digs and was 9/9 serving, with an ace. Emily Davis had 15 assists, four digs, three kills and was 6/6 serving.
Piggott won the junior high match 26-24, 25-20.
Mercado had five kills, a dig and three aces. Palmer had three digs, and Greer had a kill. Kailey Moody had eight assists, three digs and was 5/5 serving. Ellery Gillham had three digs, two kills and was 10/12 serving, with three aces. Prater added two digs and was 7/7 serving, with two aces, and Forrester was 5/5 from the service line.
