Hoxie mayor gives
update on city cleanup

Hoxie Mayor Lanny Tinker gave an update Aug. 15 to citizens on strategies he's planning to implement that will improve city cleanup.

Tinker said the city's commitment to cleanup has not been satisfactory. Something he promises to improve by the end of the year.

One change Tinker plans to bring before the city council is to regulate times trash bins can be set out and types of bins that can be used. He said that several residents are using items like large chemical containers that are left out year round to collect their trash in.

Worse yet, Tinker reported there are some who don't use any receptacle. Bagged garbage left out loose attracts stray dogs, cats and other animals that tear into the bags, scattering the garbage.

Tinker proposed an ordinance that would further regulate how garbage had to be set out, including appropriate times and receptacles. Those in attendance were in majority support of the ordinance being considered by the council.

Another necessity for city cleanup to be successful, according to Tinker, is volunteer support. He recognized Will Riley and Paula Decker as the vast majority of volunteer cleanup the city currently has.

Decker reported that she has collected 125 bags of garbage since she started picking up trash around Hoxie. Riley, who also writes songs, performed his new one about not trashing the town. It promoted cleanup, not littering and teaching children to do the same.

Tinker said he is planning several citywide cleanup days and encourages citizens to take action. He added that those unable to walk and collect garbage can still help in other ways and are encouraged to contact city hall at 886-2742 for more information.

He also said he will be promoting cleanup opportunities through the city's Facebook page.
