Benesch is new WR Alderman

The Walnut Ridge City Council filled the vacant seat left by Allen Smith at Monday night's meeting. Steven Benesch was unanimously approved to be the alderman for ward 1, position 2.

Benesch moved to Hoxie when he was 15 where he attended school. After graduating, he enlisted in the United State Marine Corps. He returned to Walnut Ridge after his honorable discharge in 2007.

He currently works as a regional manager for Murphy Oil USA. Benesch is active in the community coaching in the NEA Youth Football League and Walnut Ridge Little League Baseball. He and his wife, Amber, have two children.

Hoxie mayor gives update on city cleanup

Hoxie Mayor Lanny Tinker gave an update Aug. 15 to citizens on strategies he's planning to implement that will improve city cleanup.

Tinker said the city's commitment to cleanup has not been satisfactory. Something he promises to improve by the end of the year.

One change Tinker plans to bring before the city council is to regulate times trash bins can be set out and types of bins that can be used. He said that several residents are using items like large chemical containers that are left out year round to collect their trash in.

BatR offers two days of entertainment

The seventh annual Beatles at the Ridge Festival is set for Friday, Sept. 15, and Saturday Sept. 16, in downtown Walnut Ridge. This year's Friday events have been expanded to offer two days of entertainment to festival goers.

"While Beatles at the Ridge has always included Friday evening activities, this year the festival has expanded to truly be a two-day event," Gretchen Hunt, chair of the Lawrence County Chamber Board, said.

Chamber quarterly meeting set

The Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce will host a quarterly meeting Thursday, Sept. 7, at noon in the Lawrence County Meeting Room.

Sue McGowan, director of economic development for the Paragould Regional Chamber of Commerce, will be the guest speaker.

A meal of sandwiches, chips, fruit and tea or water will be catered by Chicken Shack Produce.
