CLASS IN SESSION - Lizabeth Robinson shelves some books in her classroom at Hoxie Elementary in preparation for the new school year. This is Robinson's first year at Hoxie. She will teach fourth-grade social studies and writing. Monday is the first day of school for all Lawrence County Public Schools.

County Fair schedule announced

The Lawrence County Fair festivities kick off this weekend with the Lawrence County Fair Pageants on Friday and Saturday in the Sloan-Hendrix School gymnasium.

Cute Baby Girl and Boy, Cute Kiddie Girl and Boy and Tiny Miss divisions will be Friday starting at 6, and Petite Miss, Little Miss, Young Junior Miss, Junior Miss and Miss divisions will begin at 6 on Saturday.

The fair will officially kick off on Tuesday with horse halter class in the rodeo arena at 7 p.m.

Hoxie to be showcased at capitol

The city of Hoxie will be the subject of a historic display at the Arkansas State Capitol in Little Rock this fall.

The exhibit will feature information on the establishment of the city, as well as its history through the 1960s, including the desegregation of Hoxie School.

A meeting will be held on Thursday at noon at Hoxie City Hall regarding the display.

Williams receives $32,500 from estate

Williams Baptist College has established a new scholarship fund following a gift from the estate of the late Mary Frances Speakes of Siloam Springs.

Williams recently received $32,500 from the Speakes estate to be applied toward scholarships for WBC students.

Speakes died last year at the age of 95. Born and raised in Siloam Springs, she taught music at Siloam Springs Elementary School for 42 years, and taught piano lessons for 65 years. She also played the organ at Siloam Springs First Baptist Church for more than half a century.
