topic at ATOD meeting

The Lawrence County ATOD (Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs) Coalition hosted a town hall meeting on Thursday evening at Black Rock.

Several topics were discussed, but the topic that found its way to the forefront was the recent legalization of medical marijuana.

Robert Brech, general counsel with the Arkansas Department of Health, shared some basic information about how the law will be implemented.

Because marijuana is still an illegal substance by federal standards, doctors cannot prescribe marijuana, but they can certify patients as having one of 18 conditions that qualify.

New LawCo. Jail to becompleted in January

With the exterior of the building almost complete, the new site for the Lawrence County Jail is set to be finished in January.

Smith-Doyle Contractors, Inc. of Cordova, Tenn., a part of SouthBuild Team of Tennessee, is the project contractor. SouthBuild focuses on building rural detention facilities.

NEA Game Fest slated to benefit children's shelter

The Northeast Arkansas Gamers Guild will host NEA Game Fest in Hoxie, Oct. 13-14, to benefit The Children's Shelter.

NEA Game Fest is a two-day convention featuring a variety of tabletop gaming events, including demos, tournaments and open play. Prizes will be given away throughout the event.

Sarah Brown, event co-organizer, said that this convention has been a long time in the making. "Hosting a local tabletop gaming convention is an idea that the NEA Gamers Guild has been exploring since its formation two and a half years ago," said Brown. "We're excited that we've found the perfect spot for starting this convention in Hoxie and are looking forward to providing two days of gaming to people in Northeast Arkansas and surrounding areas."

Fort Campbell Unit visits WR Airport

Several local residents were on hand Sunday as a unit of Blackhawk and Chinook helicopters made a stop at the Walnut Ridge Regional Airport on their way back to Fort Campbell, Ky.

The unit had stopped previously and made plans to stop again on their way home.

Airport Commissioner Lloyd Clark who was on hand to represent the commission on Sunday, had reported to the commission at its last meeting that the hospitality given by Airport Manager Stacy Hoggard and her staff was outstanding.
