WR Alderman resigns
Walnut Ridge Alderman Allen Smith turned in his letter of resignation last week.
Smith has served on the Walnut Ridge City Council for 30 months and said he struggled with the decision to leave.
"I feel very fortunate to have served that time with some of the finest persons on the past, and present councils, and all of the other persons who help make the city operate efficiently and effectively," Smith wrote in his letter.
Smith apologized for the short notice of his resignation, which became effective Friday. He gave no specific reason for why he left the position but stated that he was confident that Walnut Ridge is in capable hands.
His parting request for the council was to use the emergency clause judiciously to allow citizens the time needed to voice their opinion before items are passed by the council.
With the seat vacant, the council will appoint someone to fill the remainder of Smith's term.
