Peanut Growers, Wounded
Warriors support flood relief

In response to the devastating floods in Northeast Arkansas in May, the Arkansas Peanut Growers Association (APGA) and Peanut Proud will deliver 30,000 jars of peanut butter today to the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas in Jonesboro.

The Arkansas Peanut Growers Association is donating $10,000 from its co-promotion funds and Peanut Proud, the industry's charitable organization, is contributing $20,000 to provide a full truckload of peanut butter for people in Randolph, Lawrence and Clay counties who were hardest hit by the flooding.

Pictures of the Past

Bobby D. Smith shows a June 23, 1977, newspaper that includes an article about an accident he was involved in 40 years ago. Smith was driving a county road department grader in Portia, when he was struck in the rear by a tractor-trailer. "Witnesses said that the force of the impact knocked the grader into the air 'like a toy,' and that it struck the top of the trailer during its flight," the story states. The grader then struck a pickup truck that was parked in front of Latham's Grocery. Smith managed to hold on to the grader's steering wheel during the collision to avoid more serious injuries. He said, while he did have more injuries than originally thought, he is very fortunate to be alive today to tell the tale.
