WR to see sanitation
changes this summer

Beginning July 5, the Walnut Ridge street and sanitation department will be rolling out the brand new Cascade Solution garbage carts for local residents and businesses.

Each household with a water meter will receive a 96-gallon, dolly-style garbage cart to begin placing their trash in. This uniform system will replace the former system, in which residents could set out any trash bag, garbage can or box to be picked up by the sanitation crew.

All trash must be placed in the cart with the lid closed, then rolled out to the street for pick up. Residents will be cited if their cart is not facing forward or is obstructed by other nearby objects. After their trash is picked up, residents will have 24 hours to remove their cart from the street.

Road work discussed at county meeting

Residents living on Lawrence Road 210 spoke out about an unsatisfactory job a county grader did on the road recently at Monday night's quorum court meeting.

County Judge John Thomison said that attempting to recover from recent storm damages has put on hold a much-needed training workshop for some of his drivers, but a workshop is being scheduled.

The road in question has to be graded regularly due to increased truck traffic from American Silica. Thomison said Silica has been aware of the issues on the road, which includes a significant amount of dust being stirred up in the air. The plant has ordered a palette of a dust retardant that will harden the road and keep dust down.

WR Council to discuss medical marijuana

The Walnut Ridge City Council plans to discuss the possibility of medical marijuana businesses coming to town at Monday night's June council meeting.

Mayor Charles Snapp said he has been approached by three marijuana cultivation facilities, as well as one dispensary, interested in the potential of locating in Walnut Ridge.

Snapp decided to bring the topic before the city council because public applications for medical marijuana facilities begin July 1, and he wants the city to be aware of the possibility beforehand.

Wright experiences world religions on Chicago trip

Sara Wright, a 2014 graduate of Hoxie High School, spent her first weekend in April exploring world religions in Chicago. During her spring semester at Harding University in Searcy, she chose to take a world religions class.

Many may have questioned Wright, a biology major, for taking a class so outside her course of study. However, Wright took the class with a purpose. "I chose to take this class because I think it's important to learn about people different from us so we can better understand and communicate with them."

This year, categories have been set for the contest, and those entering photos are asked to designate which category they want their photo to be judged in. Photographers are reminded that the judges generally prefer candid photos rather than posed photos.
