Happy 50th, Lake
Charles State Park

Happy 50th anniversary to Lake Charles State Park, near Powhatan, and its staff who maintain and operate it. The anniversary surely brings to mind good memories for Lawrence Countians and other visitors who have spent time there through the years.

Lake Charles State Park is named for the late Charles C. Snapp, who was the uncle of another namesake, Walnut Ridge Mayor Charles E. Snapp.

Pictures of the Past

On the afternoon of May 27, 1940, elements of the 61st Coast Artillery Regiment of Fort Sheridan, Ill., rolled into Walnut Ridge for an overnight camp. They were returning home after three weeks of War Games on the Louisiana-Texas border to determine combat readiness of the troops. Organized in 1917, the 61st was one of the first anti-aircraft regiments in the United States. The 1,300 men and 290 vehicles camped overnight in an open field just south of the Walnut Ridge High School.
