May seems to be the month of transition. Students are graduating from preschools, high schools and colleges and transitioning to a new phase of life. That new phase might be advanced training or education, full-time work or just a temporary transition to summer jobs, camps or travels.
Pictures of the Past
Former Governor Frank White campaigns at the Portia Picnic during the early 1980s. The Portia Picnic, which was traditionally held near the July 4 holiday, was a popular destination for politicians during election years. In 2015, the picnic, which marks its 112th year in 2017, moved to May, near the Memorial Day holiday. This year's picnic opens on Tuesday.
