Lady Bobcats advance to state
Baylee Davis hit a home run and had three RBIs to lead the Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats to a 7-1 victory over Mountain View in the first round of the Region 3A-3 Softball Tournament at Manila on Saturday.
In addition to sending the Lady Cats into the semifinals, the win also secured a spot in the 3A State Softball Tournament.
Against Mountain View, Walnut Ridge got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when Baylee Haskins drew a leadoff walk. Haskins stole second base and scored on a single by Davis to give the Lady Cats a 1-0 lead.
Mountain View tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth inning, but Walnut Ridge regained the advantage with two runs in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Shyanne Foley doubled and Briley Henson reached on an error to give Walnut Ridge runners on first and second. Kailey Blazer lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Foley. Megan Jared followed with a single to bring Henson home and give the Lady Bobcats a 3-1 lead.
Walnut Ridge extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Katie Kersey led off the inning with a single and was followed by Davis, who blasted a two-run homer to give the Lady Cats a 5-1 lead. Walnut Ridge added two more runs in the inning for a 7-1 lead.
Walnut Ridge pitching held the Lady Jackets scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Besides Davis, Jared also had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Alyssa Jones went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Foley went 1-for-3, with a double, and Kersey went 1-for-4 and Blazer had an RBI. Baylee Burris went 1-for-3.
Haskins picked up the complete-game win in the circle, allowing one run, with seven strikeouts.
Walnut Ridge fell to the Rivercrest Lady Colts 10-2 in the regional semifinals on Monday.
The Lady Bobcats scored their two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Burris reached on an error and Foley drew a walk to give Walnut Ridge two base runners. After two batters were retired, Blazer smacked a single, scoring both runners.
Haskins went 4-for-4 at the plate, with a pair of doubles, while Blazer finished with a single and two RBIs.
The loss to Rivercrest sent the Lady Bobcats into a consolation game against the Melbourne Lady Bearkatz later on Monday. Walnut Ridge prevailed 12-5 to earn the region's third seed in the state tournament.
Walnut Ridge took an early lead with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Haskins reached on an error and scored on a single by Davis. After Burris walked, Foley singled home Davis with the Cats' second run. Henson and Blazer also had run-scoring hits in the inning.
The Lady Cats added one run in the second inning and five in the third, as the lead grew to 10-1. Haskins belted a two-run home run in the Lady Cats' big third inning. Walnut Ridge's final two runs came in the fourth inning.
Haskins finished 1-for-3 at the plate, with three RBIs, while Davis went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Burris went 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Foley went 1-for-3 and drove in two runs, and Henson also had two RBIs. Jones went 2-for-3 with a double. Blazer went 1-for-4 with two RBIs, and Jared went 1-for-2 with a triple.
Next up for the Lady Bobcats is the 3A State Tournament at Harrison. Walnut Ridge is slated to play Rose Bud in the first round on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
