County continues to work
toward improvements

Megan Heyl
Staff Writer

County Judge John Thomison gave reports on multiple improvements the county is working toward on the roads and in the courthouse.

Thomison said the county has been approved for a $40,000 unpaved road grant with in-kind labor matching. He said the check is not in hand, but he is scheduled to go pick it up soon and will give a full report on what roads will be worked on utilizing the funds.

A grant to continue improvements on the courthouse roof has been applied for. The county will receive word on that grant in June. The first of the recent heavy rains revealed some leaks over the laundry facility in the jail portion of the courthouse. Those have since been patched and leaking did not occur in the more recent rains.

The judge said he is looking into a yearly maintenance agreement on the courthouse's generator, which has not been serviced in several years. Initial assessments show the motor is in good shape but other parts will need to be addressed including the transfer switch, which recently had a failure.

The breaker boxes are also due for upgrading as signs of corrosion have been found. Thomison said those have been ordered.

The radio tower at the back of the courthouse has also been assessed. The tower itself is in good shape, but guide wires need to be redone. Thomison said he is awaiting the bid on that.

Also at the meeting:

Thomison gave an update on the flooding, saying that damage assessment is slow going as the water is still too high in many places. (See related story on flooding).

the court voted to pay those unable to make it to work during the flooding due to safety concerns and road closures. Those who did work will be awarded one flex day.

Justice Junior Briner announced the budget committee is scheduled to meet June 5 at 3 p.m. to review the first five months of the year.
