Lady Cats are district champions

The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats defeated the host Corning Lady Bobcats 10-0 to win the championship of the 3A-3 District Softball Tournament on Thursday.

Walnut Ridge pounced on the home team early, with a six-run first inning. The Lady Cats added a run in the second inning, two in the fourth and one in the fifth.

For Walnut Ridge, Baylee Burris had three hits, including a double, two RBIs and scored three runs. Katie Kersey scored a run and had two RBIs, and Baylee Haskins had an RBI. Baylee Davis scored two runs and had a hit. Shyanne Foley had a hit and scored a run, and Alyssa Jones scored a run. Kailey Blazer had a hit and scored a run, and Megan Jared had an RBI.

Semifinals

Walnut Ridge moved into the finals after defeating Hoxie 12-9 in the semifinal round. The game began on Wednesday, but was suspended due to rain, and concluded on Thursday.

The game was tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the third inning when Walnut Ridge scored four runs to open up a 6-2 lead. After each team scored a run in the fourth inning to make the score 7-3, Hoxie rallied for four runs in the top of the fifth to tie the contest 7-7. Walnut Ridge answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the advantage at 9-7. Once again, the Lady Mustangs would claw back to tie the contest at 9-9 in the top of the sixth inning, and once again the Lady Bobcats would respond to the challenge, plating three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 12-9 lead. Walnut Ridge kept the Lady Mustangs off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh to end the game.

Offensively for Walnut Ridge, Haskins had three hits, including a double, an RBI and scored three runs. Davis had three three hits, three RBIs and scored three runs, and Kersey had an RBI. Burris had three hits and scored two runs. Foley had three hits, including a double, three RBIs and scored a run. Briley Henson had a hit, an RBI and scored a run. Jared had two hits and scored two runs, and Blazer had a hit.

For Hoxie, Abby Guntharp had three hits, including two doubles, and scored two runs. Jarah Jones had three hits, including a triple, and scored two runs. Kelsey Moody had two hits and scored two runs. Mackenzie Orrick had two hits, and scored a run. Katie Romine had a hit and scored a run. Sarah Riggs had three hits, and Devyn Pollard scored a run.

First round

Walnut Ridge batted around twice and scored 15 runs in the first inning en route to a 19-0 blowout of the Osceola Lady Seminoles in first game of the district tournament.
