Lady Cats are district champions
The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats defeated the host Corning Lady Bobcats 10-0 to win the championship of the 3A-3 District Softball Tournament on Thursday.
Walnut Ridge pounced on the home team early, with a six-run first inning. The Lady Cats added a run in the second inning, two in the fourth and one in the fifth.
For Walnut Ridge, Baylee Burris had three hits, including a double, two RBIs and scored three runs. Katie Kersey scored a run and had two RBIs, and Baylee Haskins had an RBI. Baylee Davis scored two runs and had a hit. Shyanne Foley had a hit and scored a run, and Alyssa Jones scored a run. Kailey Blazer had a hit and scored a run, and Megan Jared had an RBI.
Screamin' Eagles advance to state track meet
Hillcrest High School senior high track team members competed at the 1A Region 2 conference meet in Mountain Home on April 25 with several athletes qualifying for the 1A state meet by placing either first or second in an event.
Girls results included:
Meridith Helms - discus throw, sixth place, 56'7".
Gabby Jones - long jump, eighth place, 11'5.5"; shot put, sixth place, 21'8"; 300-meter hurdles, fourth place, 1:07.84.
Abby Orrick - shot put, eighth place, 20'4"; discus throw, eighth place, 50'9".
Paige Penn - high jump, fourth place, 4'2".
Greyhounds are district runners up
The Buffalo Island Central Mustangs edged Sloan-Hendrix 5-4 in the finals of the 2A-2 District Baseball Tournament on Friday at Marked Tree. The Greyhounds will advance to the 2A-North Regional Tournament at Palestine-Wheatley High School. Sloan-Hendrix is scheduled to play Des Arc on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Sloan-Hendrix earned their way into the finals by defeating Marmaduke 11-0 in the first round on Thursday and slipping past East Poinsett County 5-4 earlier on Friday.
The Greyhounds finished the regular-season schedule by defeating Cotter 9-6 at Imboden.
Lady Mustangs advance to regional tourney
The Hoxie Lady Mustangs defeated Riverside 10-7 in extra innings in the first round of the 3A-3 District Softball Tournament on April 25 at Corning. The win earned Hoxie a spot in the Region 3A-3 Tournament at Manila. The Lady Mustangs are scheduled to face Clinton on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the regional tournament.
Against Riverside, the Lady Rebels took an early 2-0 lead, but Hoxie tied the game with a pair of runs in the third inning. Hoxie added a run in the fourth inning to move into a 3-2 lead, but Riverside plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to regain the advantage at 4-3. Hoxie tied the game at 4-4 with a single run in the sixth inning. Neither team scored in the seventh inning, and the game went to extra inning deadlocked 4-4.
Screamin' Eagles advance to regionals
Nick Powell scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles defeated Calico Rock 2-1 in the first round of the 1A-2 North District Tournament. The victory clinched a berth in the 1A-2 Regional Tournament at Armorel. The Screamin' Eagles will face host Armorel on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
A run in the first inning gave Calico Rock a 1-0 lead that they held until Hillcrest tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The pitchers' duel continued into extra innings when Nick Powell singled to lead off the bottom of the ninth for Hillcrest. After Powell advanced to second on a passed ball, Brannon put down a bunt. A throwing error by the Pirates' fielder allowed Powell to come home with the winning run.
Mustangs sweep Ridgefield Christian
The Hoxie Mustang baseball team concluded regular-season play with a doubleheader sweep of Ridgefield Christian.
Hoxie won the first game 9-0 in five innings. The Mustangs scored a run in the first inning, five in the second and three in the fourth.
Augustus Wicker led Hoxie at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Hunter Dulaney had one hit and drove in three runs. A.J. Champion went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Noah Wiles went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Carson Spargo had a hit and two RBIs. Chance Moore had a hit and one RBI, and Landon Durham had a hit.
Spencer Decker pitched a five-inning complete game. He allowed four hits and recorded four strikeouts.
Bobcats suffer tough losses
The Walnut Ridge Bobcat baseball team lost a 4-3 decision to Pocahontas in the regular-season finale on April 24 at Stewart Park.
Pocahontas scored a run in the top of the first inning, but the Bobcats answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Will Weir opened with a leadoff double, and scored on a single by Colin Phillips. Later in the innings, Chase Baker doubled to bring Phillips home.
Walnut Ridge made the lead hold up for three innings, but the Redskins broke through for three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.
