Noteworthy Hall
of Fame comments

Inductees to the new Lawrence County Sports Hall of Fame expressed their gratitude and shared a few comments in their acceptance of the honor. Inductees and attendees at Saturday night's banquet had much praise to give the Rotary Club for sponsoring the event, which they termed as "first class."

On acceptance of the Lawrence County Sports Hall of Fame honor for her father, Mary Clare Brierley of Little Rock told how the late "Junie" Dowell got interested in golf.

There was no golf course in Walnut Ridge at the time he was growing up, but one summer, Junie went to stay with an aunt and uncle in Houston, Texas. They belonged to a golf and country club. "That's how he got into golf, and the game obsessed him the rest of his life," Mary said.

Pictures of the Past

Truman (from left), Ben and Perry Shipman, all of Walnut Ridge, sit in front of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway bridge at Black Rock in this circa 1920 photograph. Built in 1883, this Pratt truss designed bridge was able to pivot on its center column to allow tall boats to pass through. Its support columns were repaired after the 1927 flood, and the bridge was still in operation in the 1950s. It was replaced with a fixed bridge in the 1960s that rests on those same columns.
