Cats clinch title
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats clinched the 3A/4A District 3 regular-season conference baseball title with a 13-3 rout of Melbourne on Thursday at Stewart Park.
Melbourne jumped on the Cats early, with two runs in the first inning and one in the second. Walnut Ridge got on the scoreboard with four runs in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, Cade Burris delivered a triple to tie the game 3-3. Burris then scored on a double by Chase Baker, giving the Bobcats a 4-3 lead.
Walnut Ridge broke the game open with five runs in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 9-3. Walnut Ridge added four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 10-run lead and end the game due to the run rule.
Baker finished 3-for-4 at the plate, including two doubles, and drove in three runs. Chaz Burgin also went 3-for-4. Will Weir and Kai Cunningham each had two hits for the Bobcats.
Mustangs suffer losses
The Trumann Wildcats edged Hoxie 4-3 in high school baseball action Friday at Trumann.
Hoxie broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Wildcats scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Trumann made the lead stand up behind the pitching of Garrett Woods, who finished with 12 strikeouts while pitching a complete game.
Offensively for Hoxie, Augustus Wicker had two hits. Carson Spargo had a triple and scored a run. Noah Wiles and Spencer Decker each had hits.
Greyhounds earn big wins
The Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds earned a pair of lopsided victories on the baseball diamond last week, defeating Maynard 18-0 on Thursday and Marmaduke 18-1 on April 18.
Colby Johnson went 4-for-4, including two triples, and drove in five runs for the Greyhounds. Colton Dail went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Tyler Murphy had two hits and three RBIs. Jordan Dail and Riley Hale each had two hits and two RBIs. Devin Meeks and Hunter Stallings each had a hit and drove in two runs, and Brantley Gholson had two hits and an RBI.
Hillcrest sweeps Norfork
The Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles scored 12 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, on their way to a 16-1 win over Norfork in the first game of a doubleheader on April 18 at Strawberry.
Kord Woodard went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs, and Tyson Durham went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Nick Powell went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Drake Brannon, Hunter Moore and Trevor Nunnally also drove in two runs apiece, and Houston Netrefa had one RBI. Netrefa, Brannon, Moore, Colton Rose, Nunnally and C.J. Jeffery each had a hit.
Rose was the winning pitcher. He allowed one earned run on one hit, with nine strikeouts.
