WR hosts Tourism Commission

A dinner stop at The Studio and tour of downtown Walnut Ridge last Wednesday evening was the first event on the itinerary for a three-day meeting of the Arkansas Parks, Recreation and Travel Commission in Northeast Arkansas.

"To my knowledge, there has never been a commission meeting in Lawrence County," said Mayor Charles Snapp, who helped host the prestigious group.

Kane Webb, executive director of the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism, had visited downtown Walnut Ridge in November, along with a group of international buyers on a three-day familiarization music tour.

Rotary inducts first class into Sports Hall of Fame

The first Lawrence County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet set the bar high for future induction ceremonies. As one person said, the Rotary Club of Lawrence County "hit a homerun" with the event, which was held Saturday night at Williams Baptist College.

Dale Leatherman, Rotary president, served as master of ceremonies, and Dr. Tom Jones, president of WBC, gave the welcome and blessing. An estimated crowd of 175 people attended the banquet, which included a silent auction.

A Hall of Fame golf tournament, scheduled for April 21, was rescheduled for this Friday due to the threat of rain. That event is being held at the Rolling Hills Country Club in Pocahontas.

Ross heads State Young Democrats

In an inauguration ceremony held Saturday afternoon in the Old Supreme Court Room of the State Capitol in Little Rock, Blake Ross of Walnut Ridge became the new president of the Young Democrats of Arkansas. He was elected for a two-year term.

Ross, who has been active in the organization since 2013, said he has been interested in politics "basically, my whole life." He is a 2012 graduate of Walnut Ridge High School, where he served as Student Council president. His parents are Bryan and Janet Ross.

As state president, Ross will serve as a liaison between the Young Democrats and the state party. He will appoint his senior staff, plan events and is "expected to raise a lot of money." He heads a 15-member executive committee that includes the seven statewide officers and two directors from each congressional district.

WR AP hires new manager

Stacy Hoggard of Walnut Ridge has been hired as the new Walnut Ridge Regional Airport manager. She is scheduled to start in the position on May 15.

Two applicants were considered at Monday night's airport commission meeting. Airport Commission Chair Don Cavenaugh said that Hoggard was hired due to her showing strong administration skills and a hands-on work

Firewood program offers win-win

As part of a project to improve the health of the wooded area of Stewart Park in Walnut Ridge, more than 100 trees have been cut down in the park.

As a result, 450 to 500 rick of firewood are estimated to be available for free to residents of Lawrence County. Mayor Charles Snapp says a program to allow residents to volunteer to remove the firewood from the park is a win-win.

Accident claims life

A parking lot accident at Frit Industries last week resulted in the death of a pedestrian, according to Walnut Ridge Police Chief Chris Kirksey.

Herschel Davis, 54, of Imboden died as a result of the accident, which occurred at approximately 5:15 a.m. on April 18.
