75 years later, events
mark historic dates

"On April 15, 1942, a Board of Army Air Force Officers, being favorably impressed with an air field site just northeast of Walnut Ridge, recommended it be substituted for the site near Dyersburg, Tenn., which Washington had rejected due to the amount of earthwork required," states Walnut Ridge's Wings of Honor Museum website. Construction work on the Walnut Ridge Army Air Field would begin on June 20, 1942.

The Wings of Honor Museum will mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the World War II Army Air Field with special events set for May 5 and 6. The Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce is assisting the Museum in marking the anniversary in conjunction with the annual Walnut Ridge Air Field Reunion.

Pictures of the Past

Hendrix College, affiliated with the Methodist Church in Arkansas, recommended that five academies be built, and in 1899, Imboden was selected due to the support of the local citizens and businessman W.C. Sloan. A two-story brick building was constructed in 1900 and became the home of Sloan-Hendrix Academy until 1923, when the campus moved to the present site. This photo from the 1910s shows the school building at the site of the present Bobbie Jean Memorial Library. Sloan-Hendrix Academy closed in 1931 due to financial problems and became part of the public school system.
