Bobcats beat Hoxie, Corning

A 10-run first inning proved to be all the Walnut Ridge Bobcats needed in defeating the Hoxie Mustangs 10-0 in high school baseball action Thursday at Stewart Park.

Cade Burris had an RBI double, whiled Michael Bounds, Colin Phillips and Chase Baker each had RBI singles in the inning for Walnut Ridge. Hoxie was guilty of multiple errors in the inning, which saw 14 Bobcats come to the plate.

Burris finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs and scored two runs. Phillips also went 2-for-2 and had one RBI and scored a run. Baker and Bounds each had a hit, an RBI and scored a run. Flippo had two RBIs and scored a run. Will Weir had a hit and scored two runs. Chaz Burgin and Kai Cunningham each had a hit, and Matthew Shaw scored a run.

Nash Gill started on the mound and struck out three batters while allowing just one hit in two innings of work. Flippo, Slade Dalton and Shaw also pitched for the Bobcats in the five-inning game.

For Hoxie, Augustus Wicker went 2-for-3 at the plate. A.J Champion and Colton Huff also recorded hits for the Mustangs.

Champion took the loss on the mound. He allowed two earned runs on nine hits and had two strikeouts.

Corning

Walnut Ridge scored two runs in the fourth inning to break a 4-4 tie and go on to defeat the Corning Bobcats 6-4 at Corning on April 4.

Walnut Ridge led 4-0 after scoring a run in the first inning and three in the third, but Corning rallied to tie the game 4-4 with four runs in the bottom of the third.

The top of the fourth inning started quietly for Walnut Ridge, as the first two batters were retired. Kai Cunningham drew a walk and was pinch run for by Kolton Oglesby. Next, Weir delivered a single, which brought Oglesby home with the go-ahead run. Phillips followed with a single, scoring Weir, and giving Walnut Ridge a 6-4 lead. Phillips was caught stealing to end the inning.

Phillips, who pitched a complete game, held Corning scoreless the next four innings to secure the win. He allowed two earned runs on four hits and had four strikeouts.

Weir went 2-for-2 at the plate, with an RBI and scored three runs. Phillips went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run. Burris went 1-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run. Burgin had a hit and an RBI. Shaw, Bounds and Cunningham also recorded hits for Walnut Ridge.
