Bobcats beat Hoxie, Corning
A 10-run first inning proved to be all the Walnut Ridge Bobcats needed in defeating the Hoxie Mustangs 10-0 in high school baseball action Thursday at Stewart Park.
Cade Burris had an RBI double, whiled Michael Bounds, Colin Phillips and Chase Baker each had RBI singles in the inning for Walnut Ridge. Hoxie was guilty of multiple errors in the inning, which saw 14 Bobcats come to the plate.
Burris finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs and scored two runs. Phillips also went 2-for-2 and had one RBI and scored a run. Baker and Bounds each had a hit, an RBI and scored a run. Flippo had two RBIs and scored a run. Will Weir had a hit and scored two runs. Chaz Burgin and Kai Cunningham each had a hit, and Matthew Shaw scored a run.
Nash Gill started on the mound and struck out three batters while allowing just one hit in two innings of work. Flippo, Slade Dalton and Shaw also pitched for the Bobcats in the five-inning game.
Lady Cats record wins
The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcat softball team swept a doubleheader from Hoxie's Lady Mustangs on Thursday at Stewart Park. Walnut Ridge won the opener 11-3 and took the second game 6-0.
In the first game, Katie Kersey led the Lady Bobcats at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Baylee Davis went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs. Megan Jared was 2-for-3 and scored two runs, while Baylee Haskins had two hits, including a double.
Baylee Burris led the Lady Cats in the nightcap, going 2-for-3, with a triple and a double, and driving in two runs. Davis went 2-for-3, with a double and an RBI, and Jared also added two hits.
Hoxie drops close game to Southside
A seventh-inning rally by the Hoxie Mustangs fell one run short in a 7-6 loss to the Southside Southerners in high school baseball action Friday at Hoxie.
Southside scored a run in the top of the sixth inning and three in the seventh to take a 7-3 lead.
After the first two Mustang batters were retired quickly in the bottom of the inning, A.J. Champion was hit by a pitch. Carson Spargo followed with a single, moving Champion to third base. Augie Wicker delivered a double, scoring both Champion and Spargo, to cut the deficit to 7-5. Noah Wiles singled, allowing Wicker to move to third. Wicker then scored on a single by Hunter Dulaney, bringing Hoxie to within 7-6. The next batter flied out to end the game.
