Pictures of the Past

The worst recorded flood of Black River occurred on August 21, 1915, when it crested at 31.9 feet at Black Rock. This postcard of Black Rock, postmarked a few days later on Aug. 24, documents the flooding on the east end of Main Street. The notation on the card states "August 21st highest water since this has been a town. 16 ft deep on tennis court (X). You should be here now, boating is fine." The "X" marks the spot where the tennis court was located. Later it was the baseball field and currently is the Go-cart racing track. (Pictures of the Past is a cooperative effort of The Times Dispatch and the Lawrence County Historical Society. Readers are encouraged to submit historic photos.)
