More top teams noted
With the Hoxie Lady Mustangs winning the state championship in Class 3A basketball, we recalled other teams from Lawrence County Schools who have excelled over the years.
Thanks to our readers, we have more outstanding teams to add to the list.
In 2002, the Hoxie Lady Mustangs won the state title in softball. In that same school year, the fall of 2001, the Lady Mustang volleyball team was state runners-up. Judy Goodwin coached both teams.
Pictures of the Past
With the two-story school building in the background, the Old Walnut Ridge School students gather on a cold winter's day in the mid 1940s for this all-school photo. A popular game to play during this time period was "Cowboys and Indians," with students bringing toy cap guns and bows and arrows from home. One student, Gary Teel, with friend Roger Waddell, (front row, fifth and sixth from left) has a cap gun and others on front row have bows and arrows. The three teachers on the top row to the right are Mrs. Hardin, Mrs. Ponder and Mrs. England. Anna Laura England later married J. Gardner Long, and she is still a resident of Walnut Ridge. (Pictures of the Past is a cooperative effort of The Times Dispatch and the Lawrence County Historical Society. Readers are encouraged to submit historic photos.)
