are State Champs
Congratulations to the Hoxie Lady Mustangs on winning the school's first-ever basketball state championship. In the Girls 3A State Tournament finals on Friday at Hot Springs, the Hoxie girls defeated the Valley Springs Lady Tigers, 51-40. Mike Chipman is their head coach, while Scott Brown is assistant coach.
To our knowledge, this is the first state championship for any Lawrence County high school basketball team.
According to a feature (See Entertainment) on Bill Gurley, former Sloan-Hendrix coach, his senior girls team was the state runner-up in 1987, and his teams made 12 state tournament appearances.
Pictures of the Past
Noel Baker and Joe Baker stand near a gas pump at Baker's Grocery at Hopewell while unidentified individuals lounge on the porch. The store was originally owned by Andy and Tressie Clinton and later owned by Joe and Lorene Baker.
