Lady Mustangs win state title
The Hoxie Lady Mustangs made history Friday night when they claimed the state title in the Class 3A Basketball Tournament.
A large crowd of supporters were in attendance at the Hot Springs Convention Center as Hoxie defeated Valley Springs, the defending state champions, 51-40.
The team started the state championship game experience with a pep rally and send off on Wednesday.
During the pep rally, team members received gifts from kindergarten students and the Student Council, and Mayor Lanny Tinker read a proclamation he wrote in honor of the Lady Mustangs.
Students, faculty, staff and community members lined up to send the team off after the pep rally, with a full police and fire escort leading them out of town.
The Lady Mustangs have completed a stellar season, including a regional title, despite having only six healthy players much of the season. The roster includes two seniors, Bekah Kopp and Devyn Pollard, who completed their Hoxie careers Friday night.
Hoxie's Sydney Gillham, who is a sophomore, was named Most Valuable Player in the championship game.
She recorded 12 points and 17 rebounds, 16 of which were defensive, as well as two assists, two blocks and two steals.
