The Hoxie senior girls basketball team is one win away from a state championship. The Lady Mustangs will play Valley Springs in the 3A title game on Friday at 5:15 p.m. at the Convention Center in Hot Springs.
Hoxie School will dismiss at noon on Friday to allow individuals time to travel to the game.
Hoxie earned its berth in the title game by defeating the Greenland Lady Pirates 58-45 in the semifinal round on Saturday at Bald Knob.
The Lady Mustangs jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game and led 17-6 at the end of the first quarter. Hoxie stretched the lead to 26-12 at the intermission, as the Lady Mustangs'defense limited Greenland to two field goals, both three-pointers, in the second quarter.
Bobcats drop games
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats opened the 2017 baseball season with a 4-1 loss to the host Nettleton Raiders in the Nettleton Round Robin on Feb. 28 in Jonesboro.
Nettleton scored two runs in the second inning and stretched the lead to 4-1 on a two-run homer by Christian Arnold in the fourth inning.
The Southside Southerners defeated the Hoxie Mustangs 7-0 in high school baseball action on Feb. 27 at Southside.
Augustus Wicker started on the mound for Hoxie and allowed two earned runs on four hits in four innings of work.
Lady Cats fall to EPC
The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats traveled to Lepanto on Thursday to open the 2017 softball season against the East Poinsett County Lady Warriors.
EPC came away with a 7-6 win in eight innings.
