The Hoxie Lady Mustangs won the championship of the 3A Region 3 Basketball Tournament at Lake City. The Lady Mustangs defeated Valley Springs 49-42 in the finals on Saturday night. The Hoxie Lady Mustangs defeated Valley Springs 49-42 in the finals of the 3A Region 3 Basketball Tournament on Saturday at Lake City.
Valley Springs, the defending state champions, led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter, but Hoxie fought their way back into a 19-19 tie at the intermission. Hoxie opened up some breathing room in the third quarter and led 32-25 heading into the final period. Valley Springs closed to within one point, 43-42, with just over a minute to play, but the Lady Mustangs scored the game's final six points to seal the victory.
Kaitlin Henson led Hoxie with 12 points, followed by Sydney Gillham and Emily Davis with 11 points apiece. Devyn Pollard had nine points, and Bekah Kopp finished with six points.
Next up for the Lady Mustangs is the 3A State Tournament at Bald Knob. Hoxie was scheduled to play Harding Academy on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
Hoxie defeated Osceola 67-45 in a girls semifinal game on Friday.
The Lady Mustangs jumped out to an 18-11 lead in the first quarter and extended the lead to 35-23 at halftime. Hoxie continued to pull away in the second half and led 49-32 after three quarters.
Pollard led Hoxie with 23 points. Gillham finished with 17 points, and Henson added 10.
The Lady Mustangs punched their ticket to the state tournament with a 74-45 blowout win over Clinton on Thursday.
Leading 13-7 after one quarter, Hoxie outscored Clinton 26-11 in the second period to move out to a 39-18 halftime advantage and continued to pull away in the second half.
Pollard and Gillham each scored 24 points for Hoxie. Gillham, a 6'0" sophomore, scored her 1,000th career point and got her 600th career rebound for the Lady Mustangs.
