Airport prepares to
hire new manager

With an early spring, the Walnut Ridge Regional Airport Commission agreed that it was time to look to fill the vacant airport manager position. The commission had opted to leave the position open through the less busy, winter months.

Commissioners agreed that a thorough job description needed to be written to encompass all aspects of the job. Commission Chair Don Cavenaugh said while the manager first and foremost will be an administrative role, the position also requires some hands on work at the airport.

"This airport is not big enough for a full-time administrator," Cavenaugh said. The job description will include aspects of maintenance and services expected from the manager, including fueling planes. Cavenaugh said he also wants the manager to be part of the community and act as the face of the airport.

Commissioner Brett Cooper will work on developing the job description for the position, which will be advertised in local papers within the month.

Also at the meeting, commissioners reviewed a plan to dispose of a plane on airport property. The plan outlined how the contractor would use an old concrete pad to disassemble parts pulled from the plane.

The contractor stated in the proposal that they would avoid using the ramp and shouldn't cause any damage to the pavement.

The commission voted to have Walnut Ridge City Attorney Nancy Hall draw up an agreement regarding the procedure to be signed by both parties before work begins.

In other business:

The commission approved a basic agreement with recently contracted engineering firm McClelland Consulting Engineers, Inc. Commissioner Lloyd Clark said one thing to be aware of is the firm may hire a sub-contractor up to $10,000 without approval. The commission opted to leave this in as there wouldn't be many times a bid would be that low and they are still able to negotiate terms for individual projects.

Cavenaugh updated the council that information regarding some farmland they have for lease is posted on the Walnut Ridge Facebook page, but he has had no inquiries.
