S-H teams advance to regionals

The Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds and Lady Greyhounds wrapped up play in the 2A-2 District Basketball Tournament at Cotter last week.

Sloan-Hendrix's senior boys placed third in the tournament after defeating Buffalo Island 62-60 in the consolation game on Friday. The Lady Greyhounds fell to Cotter 40-38 in the girls consolation game to finish fourth in the tournament.

Both Sloan-Hendrix teams advanced to this week's 2A North Regional Tournament at Carlisle. The Greyhound boys will play Clarendon on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., while the Lady Greyhounds will face host Carlisle today at 7 p.m.

Boys semifinal

After defeating Marmaduke in the first round on Feb. 10, the Sloan-Hendrix boys faced the Marked Tree Indians in the semifinals on Thursday.

Lady Mustangs finish third at district

The Hoxie Lady Mustangs defeated Corning 68-56 in the third-place game of the 3A-3 District Basketball Tournament on Friday at Osceola.

Hoxie advances to the girls 3A-3 Regional Tournament at Riverside High School in Lake City. The Lady Mustangs will play Clinton on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Against Corning, the Lady Mustangs trailed 22-21 at the end of the first quarter, but rallied to take a 38-31 lead at halftime. Hoxie widened the gap in the third quarter and led 52-39 entering the final frame.

Hillcrest teams end seasons at district

The Hillcrest senior high basketball teams competed in the 1A-2 North District Tournament at Norfork last week. The Screamin' Eagles and Lady Screamin' Eagles saw their seasons come to an end with first-round losses on Feb. 13.

The Hillcrest boys fell to Calico Rock 59-44. The Screamin' Eagles led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter, but Calico Rock regrouped in the second period to take a 26-22 lead into halftime. The Pirates pulled away in the second half, stretching their advantage 38-30 in the third quarter and outscoring Hillcrest 21-14 in the final period.

Dyllan Nunnally led Hillcrest with 13 points.

WR teams fall at district

The Walnut Ridge Bobcats lost to the Riverside Rebels 73-51 in the first round of the 3A-3 District Basketball Tournament on Feb. 14 at Osceola.

Riverside took control of the game early and led 45-27 at the intermission. The Rebels continued to pull away in the second half and extended the advantage to 65-38 after three quarters.

Slade Dalton led Walnut Ridge with 11 points. The loss ended the Bobcats’ season.
