Hoxie, WR split senior games
Hoxie hosted Walnut Ridge in senior high basketball action on Feb. 7 at Hoxie Mustang Gymnasium.
The Hoxie senior girls routed Walnut Ridge 70-23, behind a 25-point game from Devyn Pollard.
Hoxie led just 12-7 at the end of the first quarter, but outscored the Lady Bobcats 22-3 in the second period to take a commanding 34-10 halftime lead. The Lady Mustangs stretched their lead to 49-16 in the third quarter and continued to pull away in the final frame.
Sydney Gillham and Bekah Kopp each added 17 points for Hoxie.
Megan Jared led Hoxie with 14 points.
Walnut Ridge enjoyed a comfortable lead for most of the senior boys game, but had to withstand a fourth-quarter rally by the Mustangs to come away with a 49-37 victory.
S-H teams advance to semifinals
The Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds overcame a cold shooting night from three-point range to edge Marmaduke 70-68 in overtime in the first round of the 2A-2 District Basketball Tournament Saturday at Cotter.
Marmaduke led 16-14 after one quarter, 29-27 at halftime and 44-39 at the end of the third period. Sloan-Hendrix rallied in the fourth quarter to outscore Marmaduke 18-13 and send the game to overtime tied 57-57. Sloan-Hendrix carried their momentum into the extra period and outscored Marmaduke 13-11 to earn the victory.
For the game, Sloan-Hendrix shot five-of-28 (18 percent) from beyond the arc.
Lady Mustangs advance at district
The senior high basketball teams from Hoxie and Walnut Ridge are competing in the 3A-3 District Tournament this week at Osceola.
Both of Hoxie's teams played first-round games on Monday night, with the Lady Mustangs routing Rivercrest 73-35.
Hoxie led 34-22 at halftime before outscoring the Lady Colts 17-4 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Bobcats beat CRA
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats defeated Crowley' Ridge Academy 73-53 in front of a Senior Night crowd at Sharum Gymnasium on Friday night.
The Bobcats led 15-11 at the end of the first quarter and 39-31 at halftime.
Walnut Ridge began to put some distance between themselves and the Falcons in the second half, outscoring the visitors 17-7 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 56-38. The Cats continued to roll in the fourth period to secure the win.
Hillcrest splits with Viola
The Hillcrest senior high basketball teams hosted Viola for Senior Night on Friday at Lynn.
The Hillcrest girls defeated the Lady Longhorns 57-34.
The Lady Screamin' Eagles led 17-6 at the end of the first quarter, 32-15 at halftime and 37-25 after three quarters.
