BR increases garbage
fees, receives funds
The Black Rock City Council voted at its Jan. 9 meeting to increase garbage pick-up fees to $12 per month for each household in the city.
Mayor Bonnie Ragsdale said this is to help offset an increase in the fees the city pays. The residential fee was previously $10 per month.
In other business, the council passed a resolution to divide money received from closing Lagoon Road and its railroad crossing.
Ragsdale said the decision to close the road was made at the request of the BNSF Railway Co. while they were upgrading the tracks in the area. The city received $50,000 in compensation for the closure.
The mayor added that the road was in disrepair and other crossings had become preferable. It also was no longer used to get to the lagoon, for which the road was named. "We didn't use that access anymore," Ragsdale said.
The money was divided with $25,000 going to the water and sewer department and $25,000 going to the street department.
The council also approved the 2017 city budget.
